My First Juice Cleanse ft. Happy Apple Juicery
I have to say, anytime I've heard someone even mention juicing, I laughed. I like to eat. A lot. So when I decided to try a 2-Day juice cleanse, I knew it would be a challenge. But as a part of my Fit Fall Refreshers, I wanted to do this juice cleanse to reset my body after a summer of a lot of fun, eating and drinking most of what I wanted. I had the opportunity to meet Setarra, founder owner of Happy Apple Juicery, at a health fair and try a few samples before deciding on this cleanse.
I chose the beginners cleanse which includes 6 different juices to drink throughout the day and end with a meal (no meat, dairy, processed foods or sugars) of primarily veggies. So lets break down the juices:
Glow: Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon & Cayenne Pepper
Green Goodness: Green Apple, Kale, Cucumber, Celery, Parsley & Lemon
Chocolate Almond Mylk: Filtered Water, Raw Almonds, Cocoa Powder, Cinnamon, Medjool Dates, Honey &Celtic Sea Salt
Restore: Beet, Apple, Lemon & Ginger
Rejoice: Carrot, Orange &Turmeric
Renew: Apple, Kale, Celery &Lemon
Now, I've got to be honest with you, I struggled a bit because I am used to eating my veggies, not drinking them! I love to eat celery and carrots, but drinking them was quite a different experience. I had my dad taste each juice before I drank them. He said he needed some ranch dressing to go along with "Green Goodness" because of the strong celery taste! Haha! "Glow" was probably my favorite juice. It was very refreshing to drink first thing in the morning. I'm not a big spice fan but I actually enjoyed the hint of cayenne pepper. I also enjoyed "Chocolate Almond Mylk" because it tasted similar to one of my chocolate protein shakes.
Day 1 was a funny struggle. If you follow me on SnapChat or my stories on Instagram, you could see that by 1:30pm I wanted bread and meat. By 4:30pm I actually felt hungry and I wanted a burger with all the fixings! However, I managed to avoid eating any other foods (despite my parents eating whatever they wanted around me) and stayed on track. I struggled with "Restore" (Beets) because I just didn't like the flavor at all. I had to dilute it with some water to get it down and even still, I did not finish the whole bottle. By dinner time I was SO happy to eat a meal even if it was just green veggies! I also want to note that I was not running to the bathroom at all on the first day.
Surprisingly enough, I was able to drink the juices with a little more ease on day 2. I stillwasn't running to the toilet every few minutes but I definitely went more times that I usually do. Just make sure you keep some good tissue and maybe even a few wipes if your bum is a bit sensitive!
Once the cleanse is over, you are supposed to slowly add foods back to your diet. However, my day after the cleanse was my last Sunday dinner at my grandma's house before my trip to Greece. I didn't get too crazy, but this might be the one guideline I did not stick with.
Overall, I think this was a good experience and it left me feeling great. Since I was limited to the juices all day it really made me appreciate my clean meal at the end of the day. That will help me incorporate that same kind of discipline more often in my eating. I did not have a goal of losing weight, but I did lose 2 pounds. I don't mind gaining that back as long as the weight is from lean protein and healthy foods. I will not juice on a regular basis but I would do a juice cleanse with the change of each season.
If you're thinking about doing a juicing cleanse:
Start with a beginners cleanse. You want to do something positive for your body and starting slow may be more beneficial.
Plan ahead and choose days that you can relax and won't be so busy.
Avoid strenuous workouts, but still get moving. I enjoyed doing low impact activities like yoga.
Remember to drink water along with your juices. This is a very important part of ridding your body of toxins. I got so caught up trying to get the timing right on juices I had to keep reminding myself to drink more water.
Listen to your body! If you need to eat a meal (plant based) then do it! I was able to stick it out with just one meal at the end of the day, but pay attention to your body. If you need to rest, take it easy.
If you're not ready for a cleanse, you can still try a variety of different juices from Happy Apple Juicery!
Have you ever tried or considered juicing or a juicing cleanse??
